Summer days are dwindling down and school starts way too soon! If you're looking for a day of Family Fun without having to drive too far, we have some ideas for you in Botetourt County.  You'll be on your way to fun in just 20-30 minutes from Roanoke.

Hike Roaring Run

Roaring Run falls and Furnace Trail is an easy 1.5 mile hiking trail for the whole family. Most visitors use the Streamside Trail on their way up to the falls and return on the Woodland Trail.  At the falls, there is a natural rock water slide that families love to slide down. (please use water safety measures to prevent drowning). Don't forget to take some dry clothes/shoes!

Getting There:  Take US 220 north and turn left on Craig Creek Road (SR 615). Continue for 5.5 miles. Turn right on Roaring Run Road (SR 621). Travel one mile to entrance of Roaring Run Day Use Area.

Tube or Paddle the James River

The James River, beautiful and clean, is surrounded by lush mountains, you'll definitely feel you are far from the city as you glide and play.  There are multiple ways you can enjoy the river.   Bring your own outdoor tubes or boats (kayaks/paddle boards), and plan which parts of the river and how long you want to float, using this guide.  Be on the look out for places to pull over so you can swim or picnic.   You can buy inexpensive outdoor tubes (you want tougher ones meant for rivers, not swimming pool floats) in the camping section at Walmart.

You'll want to take 2 cars -one to park at the access point, and one to park where you plan to get out.  Or plan to book a shuttle (if available at your spot).

You can also rent kayaks or join a group tubing or paddling excursion, which would include shuttle transport, from a company like, Twin River Outfitters.

Walk on the Swinging Bridge in Downtown Buchanan

The Swinging Bridge in Buchanan is one of Buchanan’s most recognized architectural structures is the Buchanan Swinging Bridge. The Bridge is 366 feet long, 57.5 feet tall and the only one of its type to cross the James River.   Portions of the bridge date back to 1851 and have witnessed Hunter’s Civil War Raid, the rerouting of U.S. Route 11, and numerous floods. Grab Dinner at Buchanan Fountain and Grille
