Notes regarding time
Day use fees applyDescription
Beaches reopened at Virginia State Parks:
OPEN: Swimming beaches at Bear Creek Lake, Douthat, Holliday Lake and Twin Lakes on June 6. Day use park entry fees apply, as at all state parks. Beach hours are weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
ALREADY OPEN: Tidal beaches at Mason Neck, Leesylvania, Widewater, Caledon, Westmoreland, Belle Isle, York River, Chippokes, Kiptopeke, First Landing and False Cape.
Guests are advised that beaches at these parks are often small with limited spacing for beach recreation. Some are merely thin strips of sand along the shoreline. They are not guarded for swimming.
These beaches will be available according to the following safety protocols:
Beachgoers will be required to practice social distancing between non-related groups
Groups of more than 50 beachgoers will be prohibited
No entertainment or programming that generate mass gatherings
No beach playsets, tents or grouping of umbrellas
No team sports – i.e. soccer, volleyball, football
If the density of beachgoers increases on a beach, parking capacity may be reduced. In addition, park staff will initiate temporary beach closures if overcrowding occurs to ensure the safety of visitors and staff.
CLOSED: Lakefront beaches at Hungry Mother, Claytor Lake, Smith Mountain Lake, Fairystone, and Lake Anna will remain closed until adequate staffing is available and safety protocols have been developed. Please check this web page for updates as we work to open all Virginia State Park beaches as soon as possible.
Phase Two gradual reopening at Virginia State Parks changes effective June 6, 2020:
Picnic shelters and group sites are open with occupancy capped at 50 people (or maximum site occupancy, whichever is lower).
Cabins and lodges reopen on June 11 (see COVID-19 Update for Cabins for important details).
Swimming beaches at Bear Creek Lake, Douthat, Holliday Lake and Twin Lakes open June 6.
Visitor centers, gift shops and other buildings will open on a park-by-park basis as operational plans and staffing requirements are met.
Operating hours at park facilities may be reduced to meet staffing demands.
Maximum group sizes of 50 people and social distancing will be enforced.
